Hiring a car in Cairns and Far North Queensland
Rental cars are freely available in Cairns and Far North Queensland, from a range of large well known companies and smaller local operators.
Car rental companies can be found at Cairns Airport and in major tourist centres, like Cairns city. Most car hire operators are located in the city; however, some offer courtesy transfers to the airport or to your accommodation.
Most rental vehicles are less than 12 months old and feature automatic transmission and air-conditioning. To rent a vehicle, you must be 21 years or older and hold a current driver's licence.
Please note: Roads in the Port Douglas, Daintree and Cape Tribulation area are accessible by conventional vehicle. Roads north of Cape Tribulation are accessible by four-wheel-drive vehicles only, and can be impassable during Green Season. It is always advisable to check with the local police and read road signs.
