Whether you want to fish in the rivers, creeks, along the beach, or close to the reef, you'll have every opportunity on the Cassowary coast.
For those staying at or near Mission Beach, the best angler spots are: Clump Point jetty (except when tourist boats are departing or arriving); Muff Creek; off the rocks on the Kennedy Walk at South Mission; on the banks of the Hull River (end of Jacky Jacky Street, but beware of crocodiles); and in front of Porters Creek. You can also fish from any part of the 14km long beach.
Further north, Innisfail benefits from the Johnstone River system. Fish species such as sooty grunter, jungle perch, tarpon, mangrove jack and barramundi can be caught throughout most of the freshwater areas. Barramundi, mangrove jack, javelin fish, trevally, bream, queenfish and golden snapper are found in the saltwater/tidal zones. A very popular fishing area is Town Wharf at the junction of the North and South Johnstone Rivers. Further down the stream at the mouth of the Johnstone River in Innisfail, Flying Fish Point is an unknown and closely guarded secret spot by the locals. The Innisfail area is a little paradise for keen anglers.
Offshore reef fishing is very popular as well. Jump on a charter boat and catch some of the best seafood you can imagine. Or, if fishing doesn't excite you, you can still get the best of it by purchasing some great catches from local fish marketers.
